It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting. Simple, effective editor/encoder. Nothing fancy but makes simple cropping tasks easy and supports most popular/common formats. (XP/Vista)

HandBrake - Program to convert DVD to mpeg4 and avi. iPod and PS3 and any device that will play mpeg-4, avi, or h.264. (XP/Vista)

Doesn’t support as many formats as ‘Super’ but the base is being continually expanded. iPod and PSP owners will appreciate the special features for these devices that make usage particularly straight-forward. Pepsky Free Audio Converter - Support for a wide range of formats; MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, AIF, VOC, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AU, FLV, and APE. Includes the ability to create a ‘disk image’ file in BIN, APE and SVD formats. Pepsky has a neat, easy to use interface and conversion speed is very good. Pepsky can rip music also. Unfortunately, when ripping, it does not include track data, necessitating either manual entry or using another dedicated application to add this information. (XP/Vista)

Super – (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer). Supports so many formats, no need to go searching for additional codecs. If you are looking for a truly universal converter, Super is the one for you. However, the sheer magnitude of Super’s range does render it a tad complicated for the less experienced…one for the enthusiast. (XP/Vista 32bit)
