I'm in temporary accommodation and having to use mobile internet after years of having cable or ADSL broadband.

For the first time in years, I'm having to deal with download quotas. The USB modem has a monitoring tool of sorts that shows total throughput, but I need something that identifies the bandwidth consumption by individual programs.

I did have such a utility a few years back (on XP) – although there was a paid version which enabled you
to control how much bandwidth each program consumed, the free version gave me all the monitoring information I needed, Unfortunately, that installation disappeared when my hard drive crashed so I can't remember the name of it.

I'm now on Windows 7 64 bit and would welcome some guidance on suitable programs.

Thanks

Hey soulman – Welcome to the forum. Smile

Can't be a huge help I'm afraid, never had any personal experience with bandwidth monitoring tools. However, a quick Google and some research revealed that what you are after is likely not available as freeware. The 'bandwidth consumption by individual programs' being the major stumbling block – most appear to offer metering only. There may well be commercial software available which will do what you want but, because of my lack of any personal experience, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending one. If you are willing to part with some hard earned dollars, suggest you perform a search and have a look around.

The best one I could find which is free is this one: http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/

Sorry, not much help I know. Hopefully someone else will come along with better info.

Cheers…Jim

Unfortunately, I don't have any free/cheap/useful advice on tracking data by individual program.

However, depending on your setup, bandwidth can be used by more than just your computer. If other things are sharing your internet connection, they will be adding to your throughput as well – so make sure they are monitored as well.

The best option for monitoring total usage is to put a counter between your router (what connects to the Internet) and everything using the data. Some routers have this built in, some require special tools. If you're looking at a one computer solution, then Jim's search criteria will help you a lot.

I'm pretty sure his modem is the router in this case, and that it's cellular. I doubt there's much he can do hardware wise, though there may be an admin page he can access on the modem/router that does monitor usage. I know some of the Verizon modems will serve an admin page on 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0.
