Audacity - a free music recording and editing program. -XP/Vista

CDex - a free program to rip songs from a CD to your computer.

DVDShrink - the best DVD copy software I've used - free.

Foobar2000 - An alternative audio player that supports many audio formats - XP/Vista

Freecorder Sound Recorder - This program allows you to record any sound you can hear through your PC speakers. Songs, streamed music, videos, etc. -2000/XP/Vista

HandBrake - a free program to convert DVD to mpeg4. iPod and PS3 and any device that will play mpeg-4, avi, or h.264. -XP/Vista

mp3Gain - normalizes the volume of mp3 files so they are all the same volume.

mp3VCR - record mp3 streaming audio.

Quicktime Alternative - Quicktime is a popular format for video and audio. Usually it's used on websites, but it is also used for stand alone files. The problem with QuickTime is it's an Apple proprietary format and Apple continues to add "features" to the program. Apple's Quicktime always runs in the background using your system resources. It also includes the iTunes program. This is a free alternative that cuts out all of the bloat and allows you to play quicktime video and audio. A must have!

Real Alternative - Basically the same basic idea as above, but for RealPlayer format video and audio.

SoftDepo Audio Converter - converts audio files to different formats. Supports WAV, mp3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, and CDA. -XP/Vista

SharePod - Allows sharing music between iPods without installing software on a computer.

uTorrent - a program for downloading bittorrents, similar to a p2p program. -XP/Vista
